03 - 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
04 - 2 large eggs, beaten
05 - 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
06 - 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
07 - 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
08 - Vegetable oil for frying

→ Salted Caramel Sauce

09 - 1 cup granulated sugar
10 - 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed
11 - 1/2 cup heavy cream
12 - 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt

→ Sweet Dippables & Garnishes

13 - 1/2 cup mini marshmallows
14 - 1/4 cup chopped pecans
15 - 1/4 cup chocolate chips
16 - 1/4 cup crushed graham crackers
17 - Fresh berries such as raspberries and strawberries
18 - Powdered sugar for dusting

# How-To Steps:

01 - Peel and core the apples, then cut into thick fry-shaped sticks. Toss with lemon juice to prevent browning. Set up a breading station with flour in one bowl, beaten eggs in a second, and panko mixed with cinnamon and salt in a third. Dredge apple sticks in flour, dip in eggs, then coat thoroughly with the panko mixture.
02 - Heat 1 inch of vegetable oil in a deep skillet to 350°F. Fry apple fries in batches, turning occasionally until golden and crisp, about 2-3 minutes per batch. Remove and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
03 - In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the sugar without stirring, swirling the pan occasionally until it turns a deep amber color. Immediately add butter and stir until melted. Carefully pour in heavy cream while whisking continuously as the mixture will bubble. Whisk until smooth, then remove from heat and stir in sea salt. Let cool slightly before serving.
04 - Arrange fried apple fries on a large platter or wooden board. Place a bowl of warm salted caramel sauce in the center. Scatter mini marshmallows, chopped pecans, chocolate chips, graham cracker crumbs, and fresh berries around the fries. Dust apple fries with powdered sugar if desired.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • The contrast between hot crisp apples and cool creamy caramel hits every craving at once
  • Setting out a board turns dessert into something people linger over and talk about
02 -
  • Caramel can burn in seconds so have all your ingredients measured and ready before you start melting the sugar
  • Overcrowding the pan drops the oil temperature and makes soggy fries, so work in small batches
03 -
  • Don't walk away from the sugar once it starts melting, the difference between perfect caramel and burnt sugar is about thirty seconds
  • Let the fried apples cool for just a minute before serving, they stay crispier that way and are easier to handle
